Collectables with an 'a' is how I always spell it, but often see it spelt with an 'i' instead. I always wonder which is right. Probably not me, and if I am honest I dont care all that much as I think the a looks more right than the i does.
When I googled it, it seems both terms can be used interchangeably and mean the same thing! So thats sorted that one out for me, so what does it actually mean?
Collectables - defined in the English Oxford Dictionary as "an object that is worth collecting because it is beautiful or may become valuable" quoted from the Oxford Online Dictionary
Alternate definitions are;
As an adjective - (Of an item) worth collecting; of interest to a collector"
Or as Noun - An item valued and sought by collectors

Personally I think anything can be a collectable. Anything can be beautiful or have beauty in the eyes of the beholder, and its true also that anything can be valuable to its owner even if not in monetary terms! Of course many people do collect things for finaincal reasons, to invest in items to develop a decent pension or in the hope that they will increase in value to make a profit one day. Alternativley others may collect purley as a hobby becuase they find the items they collect of huge interest to them, it satisfys and fulfills a human need in them and the item is therefore sought after by them.
If you have a passion for something it, whether its music, badges, cermaics, plastic bottles, paper bags, chairs, silverware or skulls - and collecting these makes you happy in whatever way, then they are collectable items. Do they have to be old, antique or vintage? Do they have to be sought after by others too? No I dont think they do. Don't we women collect shoes and handbags?? Mostly bought from new I suspect.
So although the common perception that comes to mind when you hear the word collectables, is items that are old with monetaary value, often memrobilia and often unused. I like to think that Collectables is something for all ages and all pockets. I used to collect pin badges as a child (sadly no longer have the collecion) but every place i went to, I bought a new badge. Children love collecting things and there are many items out there that can be easily afforded with pocket money which could be the start of a wonderful lifelong collectors journey, bringing them much fun, fulfillment and happiness along the way. Often new friends too.
With many things in life there are too many rules, regulations, definitions, procedures, guidelines and all that crap! Lets get back to plain and simple life. If you want to - collect it. Even if its empty loo roll tubes! If it makes you happy why not!
