Its been a while since the last blog so thought I better get a new one on. The summer is here apparently although feels more like Autumn to me. Wheres the beautiful sunshine gone? So when it does shine, why not do show a bit of leg and get a tan going. Or if it doesn't shine then we can get legless (drunk) to drown our sorrows of a cold July. Ok ok I hear you! What funny jokes not pmsl.
One vintage item we have for sale at our shop is a 1950's prosthetic leg (£120) With a sock and shoe too! Its is quite a height and there has been much speculation as to how tall a person would need to be for this leg to actually fit as it comes quite a way past your average 5ft 7 something persons waist. Currently Steve hangs it on a flag pole on the shop front which attracts attention. This leg has traveled to a few fairs with us now and you would not believe the number of people who say to who ever they are with "Oh look do you need a new leg" to the point that by 3pm I thought I would scream if I heard one more leg joke!
Did you know that history of prosthetic limbs goes back 3000 years! Indeed records from Greek and Roman times show evidence of the prosthetic leg. Also of course there's the peg leg often described in films and books for pirates alongside a hook as a false hand. These actually were pretty much the type of prosthetic used in the past. They were neither particularly functional or comfortable for the wearer and in over 2000 years little advance in the prosthetic limbs had been made. Its only really with the advance of technology in the last 200 years that advances have been made to ensure more comfort and ease for the wearer. For more information on the history click here to the howstuffworks website.
So I have been surfing the web looking for some more leg jokes but struggled to find many one liners! Perhaps I am just not looking in the right place. The only one liner i found was;
Where do people with one leg work? IHOP
There are some cool pictures where amputees have in being able to find positive humour from their situation. My favorite is the flamingo one. Click here to see these images from the boredpanda website.
In addition to our vintage prosthetic leg we now also have some children's leg braces £40 each. There is something slightly dark about these isn't there! There is even a website dedicated to all films with leg braces in - see here!
If you have any better leg jokes or in fact anything to do with legs whatsoever we would love to hear them so feel free to comment below!
Also new in the shop today is a 6ft vampire in a coffin!! Pictures soon.
and remember with Christmas just around the corner we do payment plans and gift vouchers as well as posting out items and local deliveries.
See you soon
