Horror is defined by google definitions as something that produces an intense fear, shock or disgust in us or as a bad mischievous person. Did you know that Horror as a genre has a more unique definition of its own? Its referred to by the filmsite.org as a genre of fiction intended to scare, terrify, frighten, disgust or startle the reader or indeed viewer. Its often of the supernatural varierty too. Horror is one thing Black Fish Collectables sells, its what the owner Steve has a lifelong passion for and can't get enough of it. Many of our followers too have that same passion for horror.
Of course a main passion that horror lovers share is films - horror films, which over the years seem to have produced some amazing and even iconic characters of evil. Who doesnt love Chucky the Doll or Hellraiser to name two. My own introduction to horror came when i was a young teenager and read Salems Lot closely followed by Pet Semetary both by Stephen King and thats it i was hooked on the books. Just thinking still now years later about Rats by James Herbert brings me out in a feeling of fear. Especially when at the cinema!!!
Do you know how many different types of horror there are? I didnt know there were so many! Theres action horror, comedy horror, body horror, disaster horror, holiday horror, horror drama, psychological horror, science ficion horror, slasher horror, supernatural horror, gothic horror, zombie horror, natural horror, first person horror and finally teen horror. Thats all according to Wiki. Then theres another long list of the things you will find in horror fiction and films which include, zombies, ghosts, vampires, demons, gore, torture, werewolfs, witches, monsters and more! Again according to Wiki.
One of the earliest horror films was a slilent short known as Le Manoir du Diable, since which hundreds have followed. One of my favourites which i found just so creepy is the 1973 Wicker Man. My other favourites include the SAW films, the nightmare on elm streets (as they remind me of my early teenager years) and The Stand. Whats your favourite? Leave a comment and let us know below.
There are certain items in Black Fish Collectables that people either love or hate. Often people refer to some of our stock as well scary whilst others delight and search for more weirder and creepier items if they can.
Our resident 6ft Zombie, known as Chunk has freaked many out whilst others love him. Even I have thought it was a person out the corner of my eye at times. You can see a photo of Steve with Chunk on the about us page. He is so lifelike and soooooo gruesomeeeeeee even with his "Jesus" sandals and socks (no offence). Then we have had, a grim reaper, a vamprie in a coffin, the mermaid skeleton is still in residence, a horror skeleton scarecrow, Freddie Kruger gloves, pictures, so many different kinds of skulls, zombie dolls and zombie babies, John Merrick elephant man skull, a corpse on a plank, a creepy face light, a finger in an ashtray, a jar of bloody fingers, eyeballs, bats, a talking moving butler or 2, speciman bottles, alien heads, predator masks, hellraiser cubes, many different horror masks, ghost salt n pepper shakers, a crucifix, Stuart (if you dont know who Stuart is, thats a whole different story - and he is still looking for a new home, the poor love) just to name a few.
All these horror items sit quite happily alongside all the usual antiques, collectables, vintage and retro items that you would find in any collectables shop - making Black Fish Collectables a collectables shop like no other and thats just the way Steve loves it.
There is so much more I could write here. HORROR is just massive. But will stop here for tonight.
Love it or hate it, horror is here to stay. Comment and let us know your favourite horror films and books.
See ya soon
