2016 is a leap year and for our family thats significant as Steve's birthday is the 29th February. He only gets a birthday every 4 years!! So this year he will finally have become a teenager! Happy 13th BIrthday Steve!
So with it being Steve's birthday coming up on Monday and it being a leap year it got me thinking about whether there was any connection between Antiques, Collectables and Leap Years.
From searching on the good old internet I found that leap year postcards are very collectable. There is an American site that has a page specifally for 1940 Leap Year related items. Click here to see it.
Another site has a page dedicated to Rare Disenyland Leap Year Vintage Collectables.
Of course one of the more well known things that can happen on February 29th besides Steves birthday of course, is that its the day traditonally in years gone by when women could propose to men. In this modern day, it's not so much of an event as it was in the past. Equalities between the sexes has increased siginificantly (although still not quite enough in my opinion) to the point that if a woman wants to propose she doesnt need to wait for the 29th Feb to do so.
Below are some photos of some collectable vintage postcards showing the tradition of the woman proposing.
Etsy even has a edwardian images edible marriage proposal cake topping especially for leap years! See here! and below.
